3rd March, 1942 |
Two weeks after the bombing of Darwin, the Western Australian town of Broome suffered Australia's second worst air raid. Ten Japanese Aircraft attacked Broome. They attacked both then airfields and the flying boats refueling at anchor on nearby roebuck bay. Within the attack at least 88 people killed and 22 aircraft destroyed. Many victims of the attack were dutch women and children packed into flying boats on the harbour either waiting to be unloaded and ferried ashore or waiting to depart for the southern states.
Broome was a significant military and civilian staging post for air evacuees from Java. |
